Treadmill Belt Replacement - How to replace your treadmill belt
The belt is an integral part of your treadmill. A worn or damaged belt can cause damage to the treadmill deck, as well as ruin a good workout. If you find you need to replace the belt on your treadmill follow these steps.
Before Replacing your Treadmill Belt
Check to make sure the treadmill deck is still in good shape. There is no point in putting a new treadmill belt on a worn or damaged deck, as it will wear out prematurerly.
If you haven't already tried it, and the deck seems to be in good condition, try using a treadmill belt lubricant. Make sure you use an appropriate lubricant for the make and model of treadmill you own.
Replacing your Treadmill Belt
Most treadmills are assembled with the same basic theory, so this is a generalized set of instructions. If you have the owners manual, or access to it, please follow the instructions included in that as they will be more specific to your treadmill.
- Unplug the treadmill and remove the motor cover. Find the tension bolts (usually on each side at the rear of the treadmill) and reduce the tension. Push the rear roller towards the treadmill deck.
- Now loosen the front roller and remove it. You may have to plug your treadmill back in and raise the incline in order to accomplish this step. Once you have removed the front roller, remove the rear roller as well.
- Along each side of the treadmill you will usually find bolts which hold the deck in place. Remove these and lift out the deck and belt together. Take this oportunity to clean and lubricate the treadmill deck if the manufacturer recomends it.
- Take note of how the old treadmill belt is placed on the deck. You are going to want to duplicate this with the new treadmill belt. Make sure the seam in the treadmill is going the same direction. Some manufacturers will put arrows on the inside of the belt to show the direction the belt should move when installed.
- Remove the old treadmill belt and place the new belt on the deck. Place the deck and belt back into position on the treadmill and reattach bolts or screws. It is always a good idea to start all screws before fully tightening any.
- Pull the belt towards the back of the treadmill and slide the rear roller into place. Start the tension adjusting screws just enough so that they stay. Slide the front roller into the belt and replace the drive motor belt over the drive gear. Tighten the front roller.
- Tighten the rear roller and follow the manufacturers instructions for adjusting the tension of the belt.
